Bibinba are a group of Islander themed characters created by Sanrio.
History[]
- Bibinba debuted alongside Sambo and Hannah in issue No.216 of Strawberry News in January 1986.
- Bibinba eventually became popular enough to spawn many comics, much like Pekkle and MINNA NO TABO, and made the cover of one issue of the Strawberry News.
- In July 1988, Bibinba received international outrage when The Washington Post carried a story describing the popularity in Japan of black caricatures based on Little Black Sambo and mentioning Sambo & Hannah and Bibinba in the article.
- Because of this controversy, Bibinba merchandise has been discontinued and don't appear in any official treasury books recounting the company's past characters or the Sanrio website.
