Cinnamoroll (シナモロール Shinamorōru), or otherwise referred to his real name as Cinnamon (シナモン Shinamon), is a Sanrio character and the main protagonist of the Cinnamoroll universe. He was born on March 6, on a cloud far up in the sky. Cinnamoroll is a small and chubby dog with white fur, blue eyes, pink cheeks, a plump and curly tail that resembles a cinnamon roll (hence his name), and long and thick ears that enable him to fly. Cinnamon is shy but pure-hearted, and always willing to help out his friends when they need it. He works at Café Cinnamon, and sometimes sleeps on customers laps. His favorite food is, ironically enough, warm, fresh cinnamon rolls. Cinnamoroll was created in 2001 and made his first appearance the following year.
One of Sanrio's flagship characters, due to his unique peaceful nature and appearance, Cinnamoroll has since become a fan-favorite; He was consecutively voted the most popular Sanrio character in 2020 - 2024.
Cinnamon is often depicted living in a peaceful, whimsical world where he embarks on various adventures with his friends, which include Chiffon, Mocha, Espresso, Cappuccino, and Milk. Although each of these characters closely resemble Cinnamoroll, they are uniquely designed with their own personalities, rather than being just side characters who often get sidelined for Cinnamon himself, making them worth being characters in their own right. He also has a rival named Lloromannic, a devilish duo consisting of Berry and Cherry,
Cinnamoroll's stories are typically light-hearted and emphasize themes of friendship, kindness, and adventure. These narratives often involve playful scenarios and gentle conflicts that are resolved through cooperation and understanding, reflecting the values that Sanrio promotes through its characters.
Beyond his narrative, Cinnamoroll has been a significant commercial success. He features in a wide range of merchandise, including stationery, plush toys, clothing, and accessories. His cute and accessible design has made him particularly popular among children and young adults, but his appeal extends to a broader audience that finds comfort and joy in the kawaii (cute) culture of Japan.
Sanrio has also expanded Cinnamoroll's presence through various media. He has starred in his own manga series, animated shorts, and a few video games. These adaptations not only showcase Cinnamon with his friends, but they often explore more of Cinnamoroll's world and even introduce new characters and settings.
Cinnamoroll's international appeal is very high. While he originated in Japan like other mainline Sanrio characters, his popularity has quickly spread worldwide, with a fan base that enjoys not just the character itself but also the wholesome, joyful world he represents. This global reach is a testament to the universal appeal of the themes and aesthetics that Cinnamoroll embodies. As of 2005, he is the second most successful Sanrio character, behind Hello Kitty, the company's mascot, though this position is currently rivaled with My Melody.
Story
As seen in his movie, Cinnamon was born way above the clouds in the distant sky. One day, he accidentally fell down to the ground, where he met Cafe Cinnamon's owner, Anna. She took him back to the cafe, where he met his new friends: Mocha, Milk, Chiffon, Cappuccino, and Espresso. Anna named him "Cinnamon" because of his cinnamon roll shaped tail. From then on, they decided to live together and make him the face of Cafe Cinnamon.
History
Cinnamon was created by Miyuki Okumura for Sanrio in 2001. When Sanrio was presented with the original design which had himself resemble an angelic rabbit, they rejected it, leading Okumura to go back to the drawing board and revise the design to the Cinnamon and Cinnamoroll universe fondly known today. In September 2001, he was featured in an article in The Strawberry News, along with other character designs, and fans were able to vote on which design they liked best.
Cinnamon officially debuted in June 2002 as Baby Cinnamon (ベビーシナモン Bebī Shinamon). However, his name would quickly change to simply "Cinnamon" or "Cinnamoroll" in 2003 in an effort to appeal to overseas audiences.
The character became an instant hit, with Cinnamoroll merchandise accounting for 25% of Sanrio's sales by 2004. Cinnamoangels began development in 2005, as did Lloromannic in 2007, as separate Cinnamoroll-inspired projects.
In 2017, Cinnamon celebrated his 15th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, the city of Shinagawa has since appointed Cinnamon as the official tourism ambassador. In addition, the permanent Cinnamoroll Cafe opened in Shinjuku City, and an album titled "Cinnamon Trip!!" was released, with songs written and composed by Vocaloid artist, OSTER Project. In 2022, he celebrated his 20th anniversary.

Ranking in the Sanrio Character Ranking

Cinnamoroll winning 1st place in 2024, his 7th win [1]
In the 2013 Sanrio Character Ranking, if Cinnamoroll won the character ranking, he would play "Oshikura manju" with his friends. However, he failed to reach first in that year's ranking (as Hello Kitty was the winner), with himself reaching 5th. With the exception of his debut year, due to his great popularity, Cinnamoroll is a strong contender over the years, and has won the official ranking multiple times beginning in 2017, then again in 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, so far (with the streak being broken in 2019 by Hello Kitty), a total of seven, making him one of the most successful Sanrio characters of all time. Alongside Pochacco, Cinnamoroll has the second most consecutive wins in the ranking (5) out of every character only behind Hello Kitty herself, who has eleven as well as twice the amount of total wins with 14.

Trivia
- It is confirmed by Sanrio that "Cinnamoroll" is not his real name, which is Cinnamon. It is instead used as a stage name or an overseas trademark, similarly to how Hello Kitty is a stage name for Kitty White.
- Cinnamon lives with Anna at Cafe Cinnamoroll, though she's never made any appearances outside Cinnamoroll: The Movie.
- Okumura was warned not to use blue as Cinnamon's main image color, in fear of driving away the population of female fans. This ended up being a smart move, making Cinnamon a unique character in Sanrio's lineup.
- He is one of the few characters of Sanrio who lacks a nose. Despite this, Cinnamoroll can still smell the scents of food.
- Cinnamoroll is revealed to be a skilled dancer and is proficient at table tennis, as seen in Hello Kitty and Friends Supercute Adventures.
- Although Cinnamoroll is canonically male, due to his feminine-looking appearance and sweet personality, some fans have easily mistaken the character as a female.
- Similarly, he is also often falsely assumed to be a bunny like My Melody or Cathy because of his long ears, white fur, and small but wide body, though he is in fact a dog like Pochacco and Pompompurin. Ironically, his original design resembles a rabbit.
- Cinnamoroll's large ears that enable him (as well as Milk) to fly is likely inspired by the Disney character Dumbo.
- Some official artwork by Sanrio depicts Cinnamoroll in a very pale brown fur rather than white.
- Lloromannic, Cinnamoroll's rival, is actually his name spelled in reverse.
- Cinnamoroll, along with a handful of other popular Sanrio characters, makes a cameo appearance as multiple furniture items in the mobile app video game Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp of Nintendo's Animal Crossing series from a special limited-time event in 2021 and 2023 called "Pocket Camp X Sanrio", due to a partnership of Sanrio with Nintendo. They are expensive, as each costs a high amount of Leaf Tickets, and the couch in particular is the rarest. Unfortunately, like other exclusive items, they are no longer legitimately available in the Pocket Camp Complete version, therefore items based on the character or others can only be seen with players who managed to obtain them beforehand or through hacking the save file (as they are still in the game's code).
- New Leaf on the Nintendo 3DS formerly featured the same furniture via Welcome amiibo, but this title is currently shut down like Pocket Camp.
- New Horizons on the Nintendo Switch, however, continues to feature Sanrio-based content.
- Cinnamoroll coincidentally has slight similarity with Nintendo's Kirby character, as alongside being able to fly and appears feminine, he is small and shy yet quite friendly, and even shares pink dots on his cheeks. Kirby himself also appeared white at one point, though this is only for the American box art of his very first game, Kirby's Dream Land, on the Game Boy.
A Cinnamoroll plushe (alongside table and scenery) with Marshal in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, showing the two characters' similarity
- Following the aforementioned note, Animal Crossing character Marshal also has a resemblance to Cinnamoroll. Although a squirrel rather than a dog, he is a male with feminine-looking white fur with pink dots on his cheeks much like the Sanrio star. Like Cinnamon, Marshal is also a fan-favorite in his series.
- Compared to Cinnamoroll's fur, however, Marshal's is not completely white, as his actually has the shade of a marshmallow (referencing his name).
- Cinnamon's friends were created by Okumura's desire to have fans pick a character that best represents them, rather than just having the characters play supporting roles.
- Cinnamoroll did not have blue eyes when he was originally created by Okumura, as they were initially black.
- Like Pompompurin, but not to the same degree, Cinnamoroll's main hobby is eating.
- As seen in some official artwork with Lloromannic, Cinnamoroll has talent at playing rock or heavy metal music with the electric guitar.
- In Hello Kitty and Friends Supercute Adventures, Cinnamoroll is depicted to be independently living in a house somewhere above in the skies and in the three-part episode "Hello Kitty and the Beanstalk", he can also create large colorful statues of his friends (and likely himself) entirely out of clouds.
- According to the Sanrio fanbase, Cinnamoroll is often considered the cutest among all of the mainline Sanrio characters.
- Cinnamoroll in some official artwork has the pink dots on his face shown as hearts, which is a reflection of his pure nature.
- My Melody's rivalry with Kuromi is likely the inspiration of Cinnamon's relationship with Lloromannic and polar opposite themes between them.
The infamous Twitter artwork post used by Sanrio to show Chiffon heroically protecting Cinamonroll from cyberbulling trolls
- In 2015, the official Twitter account of the character was bombarded by internet trolls, with users making threats and other abusive comments in the replies. During this time, Cinnamon's friends posted on the account in an effort to protect him from the cyberbulling, the most popular post being from Chiffon, saying "Morning! Cinnamon doesn't want to come all the way out this morning, so I've come out instead. I will protect Cinnamon, so I hope all his friends will look after him too." In response, Sanrio blocked all the culprits.
- Cinnmaoroll is believed by some fans to have a girlfriend, through Mocha or Chiffon. However, this is unconfirmed by Sanrio.
- He shares the same voice actress as Kuromi in Hello Kitty and Friends Supercute Adventures, Jenny Yokobori.
