Sanrio Timenet: Kako-Hen and Mirai-Hen are two very similar video games for Nintendo's Game Boy Color developed and self-published by Imagineer. They can also be played on the Game Boy but with additional color features disabled, and are supported by/have their own border for the Super Famicom's Super Game Boy attachment.
Kako Hen is the past version; taking place in the past, and Mirai Hen is the future version; but later in the game it is possible to travel one-way into the other time period by the ladder of time.
This development group seems to have later formed their own company called Timenet, after which they released games with related elements to these called Space-Net: Cosmo Red and Blue (unlike the predecessor they cannot be played on a non-color Game Boy). Although some characters return in those games, the story is different and original licensed characters are removed.
These games were never released outside of Japan, and the text remains in Japanese; although there was a started attempt for a fan translation which never came to fruition.
Gameplay[]
Unlike specifically Hello Kitty, the games can be seen as like a tribute to Sanrio in general; featuring many Sanrio characters from Sanrio's history up to the 1990s, including the rare character Monster Zakki from Donragon, although Hello Kitty appears as a common character in various key locations like rest houses and shops, as well as the Nurse Kitty variant.
The games are role-playing games, specifically monster battling games similar to Pokémon.
The aim of the game is to repair the broken pillars of time as requested by the Toki no Roujin (elder of time) by catching monsters, battling with them, and resolving various events involving Sanrio characters.
Most of the monsters can be captured with items (including the Get Cards and the reusable Digital Camera), but with a few exceptions they are unrelated to Sanrio other than a few like Donragon and Gerara. The monsters and characters unrelated to Sanrio are known as Timenet characters and are owned by Timenet Co., Ltd.
