Hapidanbui (はぴだんぶい) is a unit comprised of 6 Sanrio characters: Tuxedosam, Badtz-Maru, Hangyodon, Pochacco, Keroppi, and Pekkle.
The name Hapidanbui can be broken down into three parts: Hapi (はぴ), meaning happy; dan (だん), taken from the word danshi, meaning boy in Japanese; and bui (ぶい), the Japanese pronunciation of the English letter V, standing for Victory. The full name has the meaning "ハッピーになりたい男子たち、V字回復をねらう" which directly translates to "Boys who want to be happy, aiming for V-shaped recovery."
The group's goal is to spread happiness through the message "大丈夫!君は君のままで、きっとうまくいく" (Google translation: "It's okay! You're still you, I'm sure it will work") and by participating in different challenges.[1]
History[]
The Hapidanbui unit was first announced through a short promotional video originally posted on January 31, 2020.[2][3] The video introduces each member of the group before explaining their mission, ending with the announcement that the first challenge the group would complete would be debuting as a band.[4]
On March 1, 2020, a livestream event was held through Hapidanbui's official Twitter account to celebrate their band debut.[5][6] During this livestream, the group's first single, Daijoubu, was first unveiled. The music video for Daijoubu was later uploaded to Sanrio's official Youtube channel on March 13, 2020.[7]
Starting July 19, 2020, a 12-episode series starring Hapidanbui titled "はぴだんぶいの今日もHAPPY DAY!" began airing weekly alongside the Mewkledreamy anime on TV Tokyo.[8] These short episodes, played as commercials promoting both Daijoubu and the recently-published book Kerokerokeroppi x Essays in Idleness, showed the Hapidanbui members introducing some of the quotes featured in the book that make everyone happy.[9]
On August 18, 2020, the official Hapidanbui Twitter account posted the beginning pages of a comic featuring the Hapidanbui crew dressed as Super Sentai, announcing that the group's new challenge would be becoming heroes that protect happiness.[10] Updates to this comic were posted every Tuesday, with the final pages shared on October 6, 2020.[11] The entire comic can also be found on Sanrio's website for the time being.[12]
The group's second single, Happy Sentai★Hapidanbui, was released alongside its music video on September 17, 2020.[13] The music video shows our heroes of happiness taking the Coronavirus-related worries people had at the time, and blowing them up as a means of defeating them.[14]
On April 9, 2021, Hapidanbui and their first two singles were added to the mobile rhythm game SHOW BY ROCK!! Fes A Live.[15][16]
Hapidanbui has collaborated with various brands, including the magical girl anime, Ojamajo Doremi.[17][18]
