Jewelpet (ジュエルペット, Juerupetto) is the TV anime adaptation of the Sanrio characters made in collaboration with Sega Toy, Jewelpet, produced by Studio Comet and later Studio DEEN for Jewelpet Magical Change. It was first announced on January 14th, 2009 at the 2009 Tokyo Toy Forum to coincide the release of the Jewelpet toyline[1].
Development and Production[]
The anime was first greenlit in 2008, and was later announced on January 14th, 2009 during the 2009 Tokyo Toy Forum. As Onegai My Melody Kirara★ was ending, Sanrio contacted Studio Comet if they could produce another anime based on their characters, to which the studio agreed. Early pitches for the anime did not include the human world and only focused on Jewel land and the Jewel Charms themselves, this pitch was more similar to that of Onegai My Melody, with the main characters all being witches searching for the Jewelpets to stop the dark magic. Ruby also had a different personality during this pitch, being polite and tidy as opposed to how she is in the final series, changes were also made to the personalities of other jewelpets however their birthdates were unchanged.
During development the series went through several phases to explore and work on the series with collaboration with Sega and Sanrio, new voice actors were hired for the series including Kamei Eri, former member of the band Morning Musume and voice of Rinko Kōgyoku from the first season of Jewelpet. Also similar to Onegai My Melody, the anime was aimed at a younger audience. Several trailers promoting the anime were aired during the last few episodes of Onegai My Melody Kirara★ before it aired on April 5th, 2009 and would conclude on March 28th, 2010.
Following the moderate success of the first season, a second season, Jewelpet Twinkle☆ began development in late 2009, while the first season was still airing. During the season's development, Studio Comet would change the airing schedule from Sunday to Saturday in addition to switching TV stations from TV Osaka to TV Tokyo.
Distribution[]
The anime would air on TV Osaka and TV Tokyo throughtout a majority of it's run, with the anime later being released on DVD. To celebrate the 10th Anniversary since the first season began airing, Sanrio would release all episodes of the anime to their YouTube Channel, with the removal of the openings, endings and eyecatches from the TV airings, a few episodes are available outside Japan, with the rest being region locked to the country.
