Magical Rion-Chan manga cover
Magical Rion-Chan (also known as "魔法少女莉欧," "マジカルりおんちゃん," or "Mahou Shoujo Rion-chan",) was a franchise created as a collaboration between Japan and China by a branch of Sanrio called Sanriowave, sometime in December of 2006 (day unknown) It won the "Golden Dragon Award Original Animation & Comic Competition" in 2009. It is currently lost media, but is partially found.
The series is about Rion, Kanna Fujimiya, and Minamo Suzuhara; three girls who gain magical powers from special Sanrio plushies. Their magical girl designs are themed after the characters Hello Kitty, Badtz Maru, and Cinnamoroll. They play the keytar, the drums, and the bass respectively as a band called the Flash Dolls. Despite the lack of the production on the Chinese manga, the three main characters had official figures, but they were only for the event and not for sale. Clips of the transformation sequences began to resurface on YouTube during September of 2021, originally found on Nico Nico Douga and was shown at an event showcasing Magical Rion-Chan. False claims surrounded a produced anime due to the transformation scenes, but they were only for the event according to Azusa Rei, the creator of the figures.
