The Melody Key (メロディキー, Merodikī) is an item from the My Melody universe that was introduced in Onegai My Melody. It is a powerful item with the power to turn the dreams of humans into nightmares and becomes an important part of the story throughout most of the anime.
Originally stolen by Kuromi and Baku after breaking out of the Mariland Castle[1] jail, Kuromi would become the primary user of it, to achieve her dream of defeating My Melody once and for all. The Melody Key is powered by the use of the Melody Bow and can run out of power if the Bow is not used for an extended period of time, unlike the Melody Takt, which requires the song of a human companion.
In Onegai My Melody ~Kuru Kuru Shuffle~ the Melody Key would be replaced by a new Melody Key with an identical appearance to the original.

Open Dream Door[]
The main power of the Melody key, after a human with a dream is found, the user of the Melody Key can then open their dream door, converting their dream into a nightmare through the Melody Key's nightmare magic. After this, the person affected would usually go under a transformation or changes in their surroundings relating to their desired dream.
Note Extraction[1][]
A secondary power of the Melody key is it's ability to extract Black or Pink Notes from those under the effects of nightmare magic. If the individual affected by nightmare magic believe their dream is achieved after their transformation, a Black Note will be created, while if the nightmare magic is reverted with the Melody Takt and they find a new desire to continue striving for their dream without the use of the magic, a Pink Note will be created.
