Osaru no Monkichi (おさるのもんきち Osaru no Monkichi), or just Monkichi, is a fictional character created by Sanrio in 1992. Monkichi's full name is Oyama no Monkichi (おやまのもんきち), meaning "Monkichi of the Mountains".^[1]

Background[]

Monkichi is optimistic and easygoing, but can get carried away at times. He is lively and loves to take on challenges.^[2] He enjoys puns and bad jokes. His favorite food is bananas and can eat 10 in one minute. His dream is to become a poet.^[3] He lives on a small mountain in the Japanese countryside with his Papa the pun-master and his Mama who is a skilled cook.

Most monkeys like bananas, but only Monkichi can eat ten bananas in one minute! Our perky primate celebrates his birthday on January 13th. He lives high in the mountains with all his friends, including his best friend, Monta. Monta is quite a bit smaller than Monkichi and can outrun any monkey around. This helps because Monta loves to play tricks on all of his monkey friends, except Monkichi. Monkichi loves keeping his friends entertained with stories, jokes and poems. His dream is to one day be a poet or maybe a professional comedian. ^[4]

Monkichi appeared in the video game Hello Kitty Online. You could meet him in the Banana Theatre and he would tell you jokes.^[5]
Monkichi appeared in the video game Hello Kitty: Big City Dreams. You could clean his car for friendship points.
My Hello Kitty Cafe on Roblox: In August 2023 a Monkichi themed amusement ride appeared in the city.^[6] A January 2024 update brought the Monkichi employee NPC, outfits, and birthday party event. ^[7]

Trivia[]

Monkichi was released during a year of the monkey in the Chinese zodiac, which is popular in Japan. It is unknown if this was a coincidence or planned.
