Otento Village (おてんと村), also known as Otento Mura, is a brand/universe of Sanrio characters that debuted in the 1980s, possibly 1985. Otento Village translates from Japanese to English as "Sun Village." It features a young boy and many yokai inspired characters living in a village together. Tissues are the village's specialty.
Various Otento Village goods were produced, such as stationary, keychains, dishes, fortune-telling stickers, and more. It was also featured under the Candy Cabinet design collection at one point.
Main Characters[]
Jirota (次郎太): The village's number one apprentice boy. He's sharper than he looks. He eats a lot.
Ponta (ポン太): A mischievous tanuki who likes to transform, even though he's easily found out. Loves dango.
Konkichi (コン吉): A crybaby fox.
A folk tale from Otento Village[]
Long, long ago, there was a mischievous tanuki named Ponta who used to eat the offerings at a small shrine. One day, Jirota was resting at the shrine when a fox came up and said, "Someone over there is calling for you!" As Jirota was about to go, he suddenly realized that the fox's shadow wasn't a fox at all, but a tanuki. "You're the raccoon dog, Ponta!" In a panic, Ponta swallowed the offering manju. Ponta was said to have been tormented for three days and three nights. The truth is, the manju had mold growing on it...
