Peggy Pop (ペギーポップ) is a Sanrio character that made his original debut in 1980. He was later adapted as a mascot character for the securities trading firm Yamaichi Securities (山一證券), receiving a minor redesign. Promotional coin banks, plush toys, telephone cards and many other goods were produced.
A self-described "lovable cool bird with a flair for acting natural", Peggy Pop is an anthropomorphic dark blue and white penguin with two tufts of hair on the side of his head, wearing a sailor hat. In his Yamaichi Securities design, he wears a stylized bowler hat. Peggy Pop's color pallete alternates between teal, pink, green, blue, and red.
In 1997, Weekly Toyo Keizai magazine uncovered the trading firm's fraud and other illegal activites. Peggy Pop was retired after the trading firm ceased operations on November 24, 1997. It was declared bankrupt by the Tokyo District Court on June 2, 1999.
