Sanrio Wave (otherwise spelled as SANRIO WAVE / SANRIOWAVE, Sanriowave / sanriowave also known as Circle as seen on the Magical Rion-chan figures) was a subsidiary of Sanrio that specialized in digital content, such as emails, mobile games, and other tech-based services mainly in Asia and other parts of the world, located in Hong Kong China in the year 2000. In order to make the email service, they collaborated with Nifty, an Email provider to make specialized Hello Kitty emails for their users along with a forum service, SanrioTown. In Japan, you could sign up for a membership to get cool wallpapers and screensaver for your desktop, access to new services and projects like Sanrio World and other member exclusive content, and free access to Hello Kitty Club as long as you had a Sanrio Wave membership with Nifty. In the US and a couple other parts of the world it was known as Sanrio Digital, its global branch. On June 30, 2018, the ability to apply was removed, and on January 1, 2019, the service was fully discontinued.
Company Backstory[]
Sanrio Co., Ltd. founded Sanrio Wave Hong Kong Co., Ltd. in 2000 after Sanrio (H.K.) Co., Ltd. was founded in April 1994. While Sanrio HK focused on the traditional character merchandise business, Sanrio Wave HK had the unique mission to create and distribute the original Sanrio contents / entertainment business throughout Asia, and eventually on a global scale.
Sanrio characters have been among the most wanted content requested by mobile content providers and telecom operators. With a mobile content distribution network that expands, Sanrio Wave worked with most major telecom networks in Asia directly or through local content providers. To further develop its content business, Sanrio Wave also produced original publications.
In October 2006, Sanrio HK was absorbed into Sanrio Wave HK to further extend its mission to be the regional hub to become an all-rounded company with strong integration of online and offline services, merchandise and content.
