The Puros (ピューロ) are a group of Sanrio characters originally created for Sanrio Puroland. According to the official lore and setting of the theme park upon its opening in 1990, the eight Puros (a portmanteau of clown and pure) came to Earth from the star of Puro, which had lost harmony. A large Tree of Wisdom was planted in the center of the village that the Puros created, and Puroland expanded from there. This story became the central pillar of the theme park. The Puros appeared often in early Sanrio Puroland merchandise, marketing, and in the park's parades, but their presence is less prominent there today.
The Eight Puros[]
King Happy (キングハッピー): The king of Puro. Identifiable by the crown on his cap and his cape. His throne was once located in the Tree of Knowledge. He was also the one who invited Kitty to their village. His hobbies are reading, bathing, and napping, and although he may seem like a laid-back guy, he has excellent leadership skills. He is a generous and kind king who cares about the happiness of the world. He can transform into a heart.
Captain (キャプテン): The adventurous Puro. An adventurer, Captain is in charge of the now-defunct attraction Puro Adventure. His house is a lighthouse shaped like a ship. However, he is often away on adventures. The captain met Hangyodon while he was maintaining the ship. He has a courageous and cheerful personality, and is often entrusted with heavy labor. He can transform into a globe.
Yum Yum (ヤムヤム): The harvesting Puro. He is in charge of food at Puroland, and created a restaurant called Yum Yum Kitchen in the old Gourmet Bazaar. He also created the old Food Machine Restaurant together with Tinker and Melody. He met Tabo when he showed up while he was having a tea party with the animals. His home is surrounded by fields and flowers. He can transform into a gingerbread man.
Twinkle (ツゥインクル): The youngest Puro from the fairy forest. Wears blue. He created Fairyland and serves as mayor of the fairy realm, despite being the youngest among the eight Puros. His home is the treehouse above Fairyland Theater (which formerly was a restaurant). He met Kiki and Lala together with Twilight. He's bright, energetic, and a bit of a prankster, popular with the village children. He can transform into a star.
Twilight (トワイライト): The mysterious Puro in purple, with a wizard-like outfit. He is in charge of Legend of Goal, an attraction that no longer exists today. Twilight lives in a house atop a cliff, giving off a spooky vibe, but he's kind and a bit eccentric. He met Kiki and Lala together with Twinkle. He has the ability to predict the future and is said to be researching magic that can make people happy. He can transform into a crescent moon.
Melody (メロディ): The musical Puro. Wears a pink outfit and is often seen holding an instrument. He is in charge of the Fairy Tale Theater. His home is above the theater entrance. Melody and My Melody first met when he called out to her while she was singing and picking flowers in the forest's flower field. He can turn objects into musical instruments and has the largest ears in Puroland. Music is always playing around him. He can transform into a music note.
Tinker (ティンカー): The inventive Puro. Wears an orange outfit and has glasses. He is in charge of the attraction called Discovery Theater. His books are also on the theater's bookshelves. After seeing Tinker working on prototypes, Pokopon asked to become his apprentice, but they decided to just be friends instead. Tinker is an inventor, scientist, and craftsman. He's impatient but hardworking and kind-hearted. He can transform into a screw.
Tick-Tock (チックタック): The Puro of time and history. Wears a dark red outfit and spectacles. A clock with wings is attached to the end of his cap. Tick-Tock Castle is his home. As the oldest of the eight Puros, he knows the village's history better than anyone. He gave Keroppi a special clock that dances to the rhythm of time. He's a gentle Puro who is respected by all. He can transform into a clock.
Attractions[]
The Puros appeared in the Puroland boat ride attraction Puro Adventure: The Legend of the Fantastic Puros. This ride told the secret story behind the birth of Puro Village. A video of the ride in its entirety from 1997 can be viewed on YouTube. Another video provides better close-ups of the animatronics of the Puros. The ride would later be reworked into the Sanrio Characters Boat Ride, with the Puros removed to instead tell the story of various Sanrio characters preparing for a party held by Hello Kitty. This iteration of the ride still operates today.
Interestingly, Harmonyland also used the Puros in their own boat ride attraction, Fantastic Boat Ride (ファンタスティックボードライド). The unique story centered around promoting Oita Prefecture, where Harmonyland is located. The Puros travel by boat to the "beautiful paradise" of Oita, where they put on a festival with their magic and the help of the local wildlife. This iteration of the ride was later converted into another version of the Sanrio Characters Boat Ride, with the Puros removed. A video of the Fantastic Boat Ride can be viewed on YouTube.

Trivia[]
- The 1996 arcade game Magical Pumpkin: Puroland de Daibouken is set in Puroland, and the eight Puros also appear. In the game's cutscenes, the Puros are shown with the ability to tranform into unique forms. A full gameplay video can be found here on YouTube.
- The Puros can also shapeshift into the Sanrio characters. In a guidebook, King Happy is shown transformed as Hello Kitty, and Tinker is shown transformed into Tabo.
- The eight Puros are rarely seen at Puroland today. Many of their attractions and appearances have been renovated and/or replaced to feature newer Sanrio characters. One exception is Tick-Tock, who appears in animatronic form at Tick-Tock Castle's clock. He sings the Good-bye Song, 'Remember Puroland', upon the park's closing time. A video of the original song is available here on YouTube.
- The Puros also appeared in Sanrio Puroland's first parade, the Sanrio Starlight Parade. The full lyrics of the "Puro March," an arrangement of which is still used in some modern Puroland media, includes parts sung by the characters. A demo version of the song can be listened to in English and Japanese on YouTube.
